Frederick Gokliz ink and watercolor drawings of Apache Indians [graphic], [ca. 1894-ca. 1899]

Unsigned ink drawings, colored with brightly-hued watercolors, of Apache Indians. The drawings were most likely made by Gokliz at Fort Sill, Okla., where they were probably collected for Edward E. Ayer by his nephew, Elbridge Ayer Burbank.

San Carlos or White Mountain Apache, residing during the early 1880's on the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona with his wife, a daughter of Cochise. During 1886 Gokliz was imprisoned with the Chiricahua Apaches at Fort Marion in San Augustine, Fla., and remained with the Chiricahua prisoners for the rest of his life. Artist. Born in Illinois, trained at Old Academy of Design, Chicago (1874) and in Munich, Germany (1886-1892). Nephew of Edward E. Ayer of Chicago, owner of fine private library on Native Americans that was later acquired by Newberry Library. Ayer influenced Burbank to paint Native Americans and West.
